The dictionary at http://m-w.com lists "size" as an adjective with meaning identical to the word "sized".
The convention about hyphenation is that when you have a compound adjective that precedes the word it modifies, it uses a hyphen. (That removes the ambiguity that the first word of the compound might be separately modifying the following noun instead of being part of the compound adjective.) Thus:
- I need a medium-sized box.
- That box is medium sized; I need a small one.
